Today we’re gonna start with the basics I just want to review brushing with you.
So people are oh my goodness how do we brush what's the most efficient way. Well you know it really depends on your age in your dexterity and there's many tools that can help you.
Today I'm going to talk to you about brushing with manual but we also have now electric toothbrushes we have different models of electric toothbrushes so you really have a choice and it depends on your preference it depends perhaps on your budget.
So we're gonna go through different ways and see which one maybe you would like to try.
Manual Toothbrush
So I'm going to start with just the manual and I'm going to use my little model which a little bit oversize but this way you'll be able to you understand properly.
So it's a very important to always brush the two arches separately. If you brush them together many people tried this thing and all that's gonna do is just put the plaque that's about down to the bottom teeth and vice versa so you're not really getting get anywhere. Another way when where the big rush which people end up doing is scrubbing very fast and that well that's not a good idea.
Yes it will clean your teeth but you can be over brushing and when there's an over brushing you will either wear away the gum tissue leading to recession and if you have receding gums teeth not only will the crown be exposed but you wear away the gum tissue and then the root of the tooth will be expose that is sensitive there's no enamel there. So it's not supposed to be uncovered so you do need to manage your energy and let me show you a better way.
So you do want to brush the top and the bottom teeth separately, and you can start either in the front or the back because you do need to do in certain order so that you don't want under brush in areas and over brush some other areas.
I would start up to start for this purpose in the front because that's where you can see so what you wanted to do is do you want to apply the toothbrush at about a 45 degree angle primary teeth meet the gums and then you do circular motions just little circular motions this is where you can actually imitate the electric toothbrushes.
And then you wanna sweep when you do only sweeps because some people recommend that personally what I find is that you won't remove all the plaque that has a tendency on collecting you know there's a little space here so it has tendency of collecting along the gum line whereas when you are doing a little circular motion the bristles are actually grabbing the plaque and then when you are sweeping away you remove more the plaque. It's important to also use a small brush I know it seems like its gonna take longer but it's going to be more efficient and you want to do about two teeth at a time.
Basically you do circles and you sweep a few times and then you go right next door
a little circles sweep sweep the circles sweep all the way to the back. Then you would do of course all around then there's the chewing surfaces of the teeth which are right here now here is not very dangerous to wear away the enamel because this is where the enamel is the thickest so there you can scrub.
Go ahead you wanna make sure all the little pits and grooves in there as much as possible are clean from plaque. On the front here is very rare the plaque is collecting on the surface because is just too thin and whenever you're biting into an apple or carrot or any kind of food. The food is actually cleaning the surface so you need to spend any time there.
Again up here lots of scrubbing and the same thing of course for top teeth place for a lot of people forget the inside. Usually there's a tongue here but this is where all the food is collecting okay as you're chewing it's very very important it's a little difficult the tough is on the way some people they have a bit of a gagging reflex so just you know relax take it easy go ahead go inside and again try to do the little circular motions with some sweeps circular motions sweeps circular motion and sweeps.
Here you’ll notice you often will have a lot of tartar build up and that is because underneath the tough that is normally sitting here we have salivary glands. We're standing like this all day long where does the saliva pools course it pools right inside here.
So if you leave some plaque its gonna calcified enter into tartar and as you all know it's a little bit not comfortable have tartar removed though you know the hygienists and the dentist will always try very carefully to to avoid the pain but unfortunately we have to remove it and it's just one of those things so if you’re careful and keeping this very clean then you’re dental appointment would be much easier. Another kind is electric this one is by Oral-B and you'll notice that there may be other companies that have them colgate has them but I like Oral-B because its rechargeable.
Many people in the family can use the same handle because we all can have our individual brush heads. The brushes when it's time to change them its it's not when the brushes becomes all curly the bristles have to stay straight this right here you'll notice there's a blue bristles this is is the indicator so you will know when to change a brush when the blue indicator will be lower.
If you noticed that your toothbrushes all curly and spread out your brush you're pressing too hard so you gonna need to change your technique because you're gonna cause damage in your mouth. This is your on and off button, as you notice its turning. This is a model that is not only turning but is also doing oscillating which we cant really see but its quite efficient in the brushing.
Little bit like your hygienist when she's polishing your teeth near the the appointment if you notice it's a little bit smaller than this but it's resembles it a lot. So what you want to do again massage here the gum line so you can do a little bit like what the hygienist and dentist that cleaning your teeth is doing follow the gum line.
Beauty of Electric Toothbrush
This is the beauty of the electric toothbrush is that it's doing a clean for you you just need to guide it and what I like is you can put it to go between the teeth a little bit more
then your manual toothbrush so it doesn't it doesn't replace flossing unfortunately we do still need to floss but you'll find have a lot less plaque and the gums will be in in good shape it'll be healthier.
What's important is just to go from one end to the other and brush again with the electric toothbrush don't over brush and also don't press hard you'll notice that it will changed sounds and so you don't wanna press hard because you wear away also the enamel and the gum tissue so you are well aware of that.
Finally i want to show you the last model that I have here. This model is sonicare by Philips and this is a totally different if you look at it its just gently vibrating a little bit like a tickle.
The advantage of this one is that it has very similar shape to the manual one so we're already used to the manual one so this one is nice and easy its very slim so it doesn't take up too much room in your mouth that's important also lot of people will go a much bigger brush thinking and bigger brush last time can do this quicker but actually the more the better the brush you know it's just going to get more space in your mouth and when you're going to try to do the back molars if you still have your wisdom teeth yeah it's going to be in the way.
Always try to keep go for a compact and also a soft bristle toothbrush cause you what you're doing you're doing an abrasive gesture to remove plaque you just want only remove plaque you don't want to remove gum tissue or enamel.
For this one you basically start again I like to start at the gum line and then sweep down you don't have to do the circles because it's doing the ultrasound so it's a lot a lot easier. Do the same thing that I just showed you at the beginning for the manual toothbrush of course there's a difference in price in these know these ones the about three dollars a day drugstore or your your dentist might give you one and these brushes are about a hundred dollars. Oral-B also makes one that's also recharge
I believe it's probably their original model and they do sell it at between 25 and 30 dollars thats called the vitality brush by Oral-B brand which is a good choice and then they have all kinds of other models 3D and Triumph.
You can go shop around and the most important thing is do brush everywhere don't over brush and be patient it does take two minutes to brush and if you have children then it's recommended that the adult brushes the children's teeth until about 10.
I know we want them to grow up and to be independent and it so it's a good idea to
show them and verify that they're doing it well but it's also a good idea to go in the mouth for them and brush just to make sure to avoid any cavities for the children
and of course for yourself.
Ideally you need to brush at least twice a day once a day sounds wonderful but plaque starts accumulating 15 minutes after you brush your teeth so for waiting a whole 24 hours and while we're sleeping we have less saliva in the mouth and less saliva like actually washes your teeth a little bit and so the plaque will grow so it's it's not recommend. Try to brush twice a day you can do a little bit more that would be great.
